Thursday: Look Around

About 57% of the global population wear prescription glasses or use some form of vision
correction. In the United States alone, roughly 197.6 million adults or 75% of the adult
population use some form of vision correction.
Even if you’re reading this now without glasses or corrective lenses, I’m confident you’ve at
least noticed your vision starting to weaken as the years slowly pass. To my young adults who
still aren’t agreeing with me yet, I promise this day is coming.
As much as our human eyes need adjustments, when we become disciples of Jesus, our
eyesight for others needs to change as well. Unfortunately our eyes are naturally quick to judge.
We look at people and instantly see their flaws, background, political view, or the ways they
inconvenience us. We label people as "difficult," or "different," or even "my enemy."
Jesus looked at the exact same crowds with completely different eyes. Matthew 9:36 says that
when Jesus saw the crowds, “he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and
helpless, like sheep without a shepherd”. Jesus did not see people who were difficult or an
inconvenience. He saw people who were hurt and in pain. People who needed healing.
In 2 Corinthians 5:16, the apostle Paul encourages us to see people through spiritual eyes;
God’s eyes, to no longer see others through worldly lenses. When this transformation happens,
you will no longer see others as interruptions but instead as opportunities for us to respond with
love and compassion to whatever situation people are facing. The transformation of eyesight is
Step 1 but we aren’t called to stop there. When we see others like Jesus does, we must then act
accordingly and give others the love of your precious Son.

Heavenly Father,
forgive me for the times I judged others by their outward actions and allowed
those judgements to miss opportunities You gave me to share Your love. Clean my lenses and
restore my eyesight. Give me Your eyes of compassion today so that when I look at the people
around me, I do not see obstacles, but precious souls You deeply love.
I ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ.
